The World War I war memorial in the village of Markyate in Hertfordshire, close to the borders of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, is a plain Portland stone cross on a tapering pillar on a plinth and a two-stepped base. There is lead lettering on the front face of the plinth. The memorial stands in an enclosed paved area on the High Street in front of Dove Wirral cottage. In front of it are metal gates and behind it a hedge and a low wall in which is set a stone plaque (WM3583).
In 2006/7 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation gave a grant of £980 towards work to clean both the war memorial and the plaque. The freestanding memorial was re-pointed and given a protective shelter coat, and the plaque had the letters re-painted and re-carved where necessary. The grant also covered the lifting of the paved surround, the laying of a new sub base and the re-laying of the paving and the steps.
The inscription on the front of the plinth reads:
"To
the glory of God
and
in memory of
the men
of the parish of
Markyate
who gave their lives
in the Great War
1914 – 1918
Well done thou good and faithful servant"
The names of forty fallen men are recorded around the sides of the plinth.
The roll of honour was erected in the town’s recreation field on Cavendish Road in 1951 but was moved to its current location behind the World War I memorial on an unknown date, as that is a more convenient and a safer location.
